A worn, damaged jamb on an Ottawa entry door was letting cold air and water leak straight past the seal. We repaired the frame, trued it back square and fitted fresh weather stripping so the door shuts tight against everything an Ottawa winter throws at it. Here is the full before-and-after.
You could feel this one before you could see it. Stand near the entry on a cold day and a steady draft slid across the floor; after a hard rain there was a damp line working its way along the threshold. The cause was a jamb that had simply worn out — the weatherseal had compressed flat, the frame had moved out of true over years of use, and the gap between door and jamb had grown wide enough to let air and water push straight through. A door that no longer meets its frame evenly cannot seal, no matter how new the stripping looks.
The goal here was a continuous, even seal all the way around the slab, and that starts with the frame itself. We assessed the jamb, removed the damaged and rotted material, and rebuilt the worn sections back to solid wood. With the repair set, we trued the frame so the reveal was consistent from top to bottom — the step most quick fixes skip and the reason they fail by the next winter. Only then did we fit fresh, full-perimeter weather stripping and tune the threshold contact so the sweep met the sill cleanly. Lasting results here come from pairing honest frame work with proper weatherstripping rather than one without the other. When we closed the door for the last time, the draft was gone and the seal compressed evenly all the way around.
Few places test an exterior door like the Ottawa Valley. Freeze-thaw swings, wind-driven rain and deep winter cold work every weak seal until the drafts find their way in, and worn jambs are one of the most common reasons a once-tight entry starts leaking. We repair and re-seal exterior door frames for homeowners across Ottawa — from Nepean and Barrhaven to Orleans, Kanata and the smaller communities out toward Carleton Place and Arnprior. Truing the frame and fitting the right stripping in one visit means the door seals properly the first time, so the heat stays in and the weather stays out.
