Renfrew is spread out. There are garages on town lots, garages tucked behind older houses, and big overhead doors on shops and outbuildings out along the county roads. They fail in different ways, and we repair all of them in Renfrew and the countryside around it.

Call 613-265-3667, or send a photo of the door and a few lines on what it's doing. We'll tell you what we think has failed and give you a flat-rate price before we start.

Town garages, detached garages and shop doors

Inside town limits you'll find attached garages on newer streets and single detached garages behind older brick and frame homes. Out on rural properties, the door is often on a workshop, a machinery shed or a double-wide detached garage, and it can be taller or wider than a standard house door. A bigger, heavier door needs bigger springs and sturdier hardware, and it takes more wear on the cables and rollers when it isn't balanced.

That's why we start every job by asking what kind of building the door is on, how wide it is, and how often it's used.

The unheated garage problem

A lot of Renfrew garages have no heat at all. The door sees the same temperature as the yard. Lubricant thickens, the rubber bottom seal goes hard, and meltwater from a vehicle or a thaw freezes the door to the slab overnight. The opener then pulls against ice, and something gives: a cable slips, a panel bends, or the door reverses and stops.

If your door is frozen down, don't keep pressing the button. Every extra push is another chance to twist a panel or snap a cable. Call us, and tell us if the bottom edge is iced in.

Wind and drifted snow on open lots

Properties with little shelter get drifts against the door and blown snow packed into the lower track. Rollers hit the packed snow and jump out. Snow sitting against the door also traps moisture in the bottom panel and seal. Clearing the bottom edge by hand and keeping the lower track free of ice helps. Don't use a shovel or metal bar right against the door, because a dented section is a bigger job than a frozen one.

When the power goes out

Rural outages after ice storms leave people with a closed door and no opener. The release cord lets you lift the door by hand, but use it only when the door is fully down. If a spring is broken, a door that is released and lifted can drop. If you think a spring has gone, leave the door alone and call.

Springs, cables and openers on bigger doors

Springs on wide doors carry more weight and are sized to the door, so a spring bought off a shelf can leave the door out of balance. See garage door spring repair for what we look for. If the door has gone off the track, or a cable has come loose, see cable repair. For an opener that hums or stalls, see opener repair.

Large overhead doors on shops and farm buildings behave like commercial doors, and see commercial garage door repair.

Repair or replace an older detached-garage door

Many older detached garages carry a door that was fitted decades ago or came from another building. If the springs, cables, rollers and hinges have all reached the end of their lives at once, or the panels are rotting at the bottom, a replacement can cost less than a string of repairs. If the garage isn't heated, you may not need an insulated door at all. We'll price both options. See garage door installation for what a replacement involves.

What happens when you call from Renfrew

We ask what the door is doing, what you heard, and whether it's up or down. A photo of the whole door and the spring area helps. We give you a price before we start. If a part has to be ordered, we say so up front and make the door safe until it arrives.

Garage door questions in Renfrew

Do you repair garage doors outside the town of Renfrew?

Yes, we serve Renfrew and the surrounding area. Tell us the road and the type of building when you call, so we can plan the visit.

Can you repair a barn or shop overhead door?

Yes, in most cases. Send photos of the door, the springs and any label on the opener, and tell us the width. Wider, heavier doors need springs matched to their weight.

Why does my detached garage door freeze shut?

Melted snow and moisture pool along the bottom seal and freeze to the slab. A worn or hardened seal makes it worse. We can look at the seal and the door's balance.

Should I use the manual release during a power outage?

Only when the door is fully closed and you don't suspect a broken spring. Lift slowly, and keep people clear. If the door is open, don't pull the cord.

Is same-day garage door repair available in Renfrew?

Often, yes. Call 613-265-3667 and we'll tell you the earliest time we have. Emergency calls, like a door stuck open, go first.
