Choosing a garage door for an Ottawa house
Insulation
Insulation is rated by R-value; higher numbers resist heat flow better. It makes a difference if the garage is attached, heated, or used as a workshop. It also stiffens the panel and cuts down on noise. An uninsulated single-layer steel door is fine for a detached, unheated garage.
Materials
- Steel is the most common. It's durable and comes in many finishes, but it dents.
- Aluminum and glass suit modern homes. Frames are light, glass adds daylight, and the door needs careful sizing for the opener and springs.
- Wood and wood-composite look good and need finishing over the years.
- Fibreglass and composite panels resist dents and rust, and cost more.
Size and style
Common residential sizes are 8 by 7 feet and 9 by 7 for a single door, and 16 by 7 or 16 by 8 for a double, though older Ottawa homes often have odd sizes and low headroom. We measure the opening and the room above it before you order anything. Windows, panel styles and colour come next, and it's worth choosing a colour that suits the trim, the brick and the front door.
What the installation involves
- We measure the opening, headroom, side room and back room, and check the framing where the tracks attach.

- After you approve, we order the door.
- At installation we remove the old door, assemble the new panels, and fit tracks, springs, cables and hardware sized for that door.
- We connect or replace the opener, and test balance, travel and the reverse function.

Springs, cables and openers come with the decision
A new door needs springs matched to its weight. Reusing old ones can leave a door badly balanced. Old cables and tired tracks are cheaper to replace while the door is off. The opener is also worth looking at. A working opener can often stay, provided the new door is balanced properly. An old, loud or unsafe one shouldn't. Ottawa weather and the new door
An Ottawa garage door works through big swings: deep cold snaps, freezing rain, spring thaw, humid summers. A door is a large panel of metal or wood set in an opening, and every seam is a place for cold to get in. Weatherstripping around the sides and a proper bottom seal count for as much as panel insulation. Changing the size of an opening is a different job from swapping a door in the existing one. It can involve framing work, a lintel, and city requirements. We'll tell you if what you want crosses that line.

How long does a garage door last?
It depends on use, climate and maintenance. Springs commonly wear out well before the door does, so a door can last many years with periodic repairs. It's replaced when the panels, tracks or hardware are worn out.
Is an insulated garage door worth it in Ottawa?
If the garage is attached, heated, or has a room above it, yes, and it will also feel sturdier and quieter. For a detached, unheated garage the difference is smaller.
Can I replace just one damaged panel?
Sometimes. It works best on newer, common doors where matching panels are available. On older or discontinued doors it's often not possible, and we'll say so.
Do I need a new opener with a new door?
Not always. A working opener in good condition can stay, provided it has safety sensors and can handle the new door's weight. We'll check when we quote.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the size and style of door, and whether tracks, springs and the opener are changing too. We'll give you a realistic timeline with the quote.
