Emergency Garage Door Repair in Ottawa

Empty garage interior with the sectional door raised on its overhead tracks

Garage door emergencies come in a few shapes. The door is stuck open and you're heading to bed. It's stuck shut with the car inside and you're due at work. It came off its track and is hanging over the driveway. Call 613-265-3667. We take emergency calls seven days a week, evenings and weekends included, and same-day appointments are often available for everything else.

Tell us what the door is doing and where it is. If you can, send a photo of the whole door. We'll say what we think happened, what needs doing tonight or tomorrow, and give you a flat-rate price before work starts.

Situations we treat as emergencies

Door stuck open

An open garage is an open door into your property, and often into your house. A broken spring, a snapped cable or an opener failure can leave it that way. We'll secure or repair the door.

Door stuck closed with a car inside

Broken spring, dead opener, frozen seal or a door off its track. The cause decides how we get it open safely.

Door won't close

Usually the safety sensors, an obstruction in the path, or a door out of adjustment. It's often a quick fix, and it's worth doing the same day.

Door hanging off track or crooked

A slipped cable or popped roller. It can drop, so keep everyone clear. See off-track repair and cable repair.

Door hit by a vehicle

Bent tracks and buckled panels. We make it safe first and then look at repair or replacement.

Door slammed down or fell

The spring has failed or the cables have let go. Nobody should go near it until it's been checked.

What to do right now

  • Keep people, kids, pets and vehicles away from the door.
  • Stop using the opener and wall button if the door is crooked, hanging or very heavy.
  • Don't pull the release cord if the door is open, because it can drop.
  • Don't touch springs, cables or the brackets at the bottom corners.
  • If the door is closed and the power is out, you can use the release cord and lift by hand. Expect it to be heavy, and don't do it if you suspect a broken spring.
  • If the door is stuck open overnight and it connects to the house, lock the interior door from the garage to the house.
  • Take a photo of the door and the spring area, and call.

If the garage door was forced or you suspect a break-in, contact the police first. For a damaged entry door, glass or a lockout, See emergency door repair for those calls.

What happens when you call

  1. We ask what the door is doing, what you heard, and whether anyone or anything is trapped or at risk.
  2. We tell you what to avoid until we arrive, and when we can be there.
  3. On site, we inspect the whole door system before touching anything.
  4. We explain the repair options and give you a flat-rate price you approve first.
  5. We repair or replace the failed parts, or secure the door if the full repair needs parts and a return visit.
  6. We test balance, movement, safety sensors and the reverse function before we leave.

Some repairs can't be completed on the first visit. A custom-size spring, a damaged panel, or a door that needs replacing may need ordering. In those cases we'll get the door closed and secure and explain the next step.

Emergency call or regular booking?

If the door is stuck open, won't close, or has failed in a way that's unsafe, call as an emergency. A noisy door, a slow remote, a worn seal or a dented panel can go on the regular schedule. See garage door repair for those. If you're not sure, call and describe it. We'd rather you asked.

Springs and cables

Many garage door emergencies trace back to a spring or cable. If a spring is the problem, see spring repair for what to expect. If the bang you heard was in the garage and the door won't lift, that's the first place to look.

Ottawa cold and wet make it worse

A door can work at supper and be dead by morning. Overnight freezing turns meltwater at the bottom edge into ice, and the seal bonds to the floor. The opener pulls against it, and something gives, either the door reverses, a cable slips, or the door twists. A spring that was already worn can fail in the cold. Freezing rain glazes tracks and sensors. Power outages after ice storms stop openers, and people yank on a door that needed the release cord. If your door is stuck this way, don't force it. Call, and tell us if the bottom edge is frozen down.

Homes and businesses

We take emergency calls for houses, townhomes and business buildings. If it's a warehouse, shop or loading door, see commercial garage door repair.

Emergency garage door questions

My garage door is stuck open overnight. What should I do?

Keep it clear of people and pets, and lock the door between the garage and the house. Don't force the door down. Call us and tell us what you heard and what the door does.

Can I release the door manually?

Only if the door is fully closed, the power is out, and you don't suspect a broken spring. Pull the release cord and lift slowly. If the door is up, don't pull the cord.

My car is stuck inside the garage. Can you get the door open?

Yes, that's a common call. The method depends on what has failed. Tell us whether you heard a bang and whether the opener runs.

Why won't my garage door close?

Most often the safety sensors are blocked or misaligned, or something is in the door's path. Snow and ice on the sensors do it too. If wiping the lenses doesn't help, call us.

Do you do same-day garage door repair?

Often, yes. Emergency calls come first. Call 613-265-3667 and we'll give you the earliest time we have.

Is emergency service priced differently?

We give you a flat-rate price before work begins, and you approve it. Ask when you call, and we'll be clear about what applies to your situation.

If the door is stuck but you are not sure why, start with garage door won't open or close — it separates safe checks from problems that need a technician right away.
