A garage door rides on rollers set into steel tracks. The tracks run vertically up each side and curve into horizontal sections along the ceiling. When a roller pops out, or the track bends, the door is no longer guided and it twists. The result can be a door hanging crooked in the opening, jammed halfway, or leaning into the frame.
If the door is out of the track, don't run the opener and don't try to force it back. Pushing on a door that's hanging on one side can bend the panels or drop the whole thing. Keep people and cars clear of it. Track brackets, cables and springs near the door can be under tension, which is another reason to leave this to us.
A single bent track section or a set of worn rollers is a straightforward repair. Rollers cost little compared with the damage a failed one can cause, and if one has broken, the others are usually near the same age. Nylon rollers run quietly, and steel rollers are the older and noisier type. We'll tell you what your door has and what we'd fit.
Replacement of the door becomes a real question when the panels have bent or split from being forced, when the door has been hit hard enough to twist several sections, or when the tracks are so damaged the repair costs a good share of a new door. Track problems get more common in winter. Slush drips off the car and freezes along the bottom of the track. A roller runs into a lump of ice and jumps out. Cold makes steel stiffer and less forgiving, and a door that's frozen to the floor gets pulled by the opener until something gives. Road salt also corrodes track brackets and hinges over the years. Clearing snow and ice from the bottom edge of the door and the lower end of the track helps, and so does replacing a worn seal. Don't chip at the ice with a metal tool where it's touching the door, though.
On houses, off-track doors usually follow a bumped bumper or a cable problem. On shops and warehouses, forklifts and delivery trucks are the usual cause. Those heavier doors have their own page under commercial garage door repair.

Common reasons are a bumped door, a bent or loose track, a broken roller, ice in the track, or a cable or spring that has failed on one side. We look for the cause as well as the damage.
Small bends can sometimes be corrected. Creased or kinked track usually has to be replaced, because a track that's been bent and bent back can pinch rollers again.
We advise against it. A door that's hanging is often partly held by a cable or a spring under tension, and it can shift or fall when you move it.
One side is being lifted or held differently from the other: a slipped cable, a weak spring, a roller binding in a bent track, or ice at one corner. We find which.
Often yes. If the rollers are cracked, worn flat or rusted, they'll damage the new track or pop out again. It adds little to the visit.
No. A slightly misaligned door can get worse with the next cycle and drop suddenly. Leave it closed if it is, and call us.
