JELD-WEN Door Repair in Ottawa
JELD-WEN is one of the most widely installed door brands in Ottawa's newer homes — and most of the problems it develops are small, predictable, and fixable in a single visit. Here is how these doors wear, and what a proper repair actually involves.
If your home was built in the last twenty-five years — particularly in family neighbourhoods like Barrhaven, Kanata, Stittsville, or Riverside South — there is a good chance your entry door and many of your interior doors came from JELD-WEN. The issues we get called about are rarely dramatic: a steel front door that has started to drag on one corner, an interior bedroom door swollen shut and won't latch, weatherstripping peeling away from a patio door frame, a deadbolt that no longer lines up with its strike. These get ignored for months until they become genuinely annoying — then a visit sorts them out in an afternoon.
How daily use affects JELD-WEN doors
Builder-grade residential doors are designed for a reasonable service life — not fifteen years of a busy household opening and closing them forty times a day. The wear we see follows a predictable sequence. The hinges usually show stress first. A hollow-core interior door in a kid's room gets yanked open and slammed regularly; over time the hinge screws loosen in the frame, the door drops slightly, and within a year or two it is dragging the carpet or binding against the strike side. Quick to fix — but often left until the door is genuinely hard to operate. If yours is already slamming, the underlying hinge and latch adjustments are the same fix.
| Door Type | Common Issue | Typical Cause |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Entry | Cold air leak, weatherstripping gap | Compression wear, hinge sag |
| Fiberglass Entry | Door drops or misaligns in frame | Frame settlement, hinge loosening |
| Interior Hollow-Core | Won't latch, binds on frame | Hinge screw loosening, humidity swelling |
| Interior Solid-Core | Lock misalignment | Weight-related hinge stress over time |
| Patio / French Door | Threshold gap, draft at bottom | Threshold drop, sweep wear |
JELD-WEN steel entry door repairs
JELD-WEN steel entry doors are among the most commonly installed entry doors in Ottawa subdivisions. The steel skins hold up well, but the foam core, weatherstripping, and threshold assembly all have a finite service life. When energy performance drops — usually felt first as a cold draft along the door in January — it is almost never the door itself that has failed. It is the sealing components. Our guide to door heat loss covers why that draft costs more than it looks.
Weatherstripping replacement
JELD-WEN uses a few different weatherstripping profiles depending on door series and age. We stock the most common profiles and carry foam-compression and bulb-seal replacements that match JELD-WEN's standard dimensions. A full weatherstripping replacement on a standard exterior door takes about an hour and makes a noticeable difference immediately.
Threshold adjustment and replacement
The adjustable threshold on most JELD-WEN entry doors can be raised or lowered to improve the seal against the door sweep. Over time, particularly with Ottawa's winter grit, the threshold drops out of adjustment. We adjust the threshold screws and, if the threshold is beyond adjustment, replace it with a compatible unit as part of threshold and sill repair.
Strike plate realignment
When a steel door hangs slightly off-plumb from hinge loosening, the deadbolt and latch stop meeting the strike plates cleanly. We address the hinge alignment first, then readjust the strike positions. Just elongating the strike opening is a short-term patch that ignores the cause — the same reasoning we lay out in how to fix a misaligned door latch.
Recent builder installation giving you problems? If your JELD-WEN door is a recent install and you are already having issues in the first few years, it is worth checking whether the door was shimmed properly and whether the frame was plumb when set. A door hung slightly out of plumb develops alignment problems faster than one set correctly. We can assess the installation quality when we look at the door.
Interior door repairs in family homes
This is where JELD-WEN repairs really add up. A home with multiple kids has busy bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry room, a home office — and every one of those doors takes daily stress. Most of these calls are technically straightforward but need someone to actually show up and do the work.
Hinge Tightening & Reset
Stripped hinge screws are the number-one cause of interior door problems. We fill stripped holes with wood inserts and re-drive the screws solidly, restoring alignment and eliminating the drag. Worn hinges are covered under hinge & hardware repair.
Latch & Strike Adjustment
A door that won't latch without lifting the handle usually has a dropped hinge or a strike slightly off position. We correct the source of the misalignment rather than patching the strike.
Door Planing & Trimming
Interior doors that swell shut in humid summer months can be planed on the high spot for adequate clearance. See why doors stick in summer for why timing the cut matters.
Door Closer Installation
For utility rooms, laundry rooms, or any door where self-closing is needed, we install and adjust door closers compatible with JELD-WEN door weights and dimensions.

The Situation
A family called about their front entry door — a JELD-WEN steel door installed when the home was built about twelve years prior. The deadbolt was stiff and there was a noticeable draft along the bottom in winter. While we were there, they mentioned two interior doors: a bedroom door that wouldn't latch and a bathroom door that had started sticking shut.
What We Fixed
The entry door had both hinges loose, dropping the door enough to shift the deadbolt out of alignment; the bottom sweep had worn through. We tightened the hinges with wood-insert repairs, replaced the sweep, and adjusted the threshold. The bedroom door had a stripped top hinge screw — repaired and rehung. The bathroom door had swollen at the top edge — planed the high spot and adjusted the strike. All three sorted in under three hours.
