A failed commercial entrance rebuilt from the rough opening up with a custom steel architectural door — designed, fabricated and hung to seal tight and stand up to daily traffic. Here is the full before-and-after story.
When the owner of this Ottawa commercial building called us, the original entrance had already failed completely — the door and frame were gone, leaving a bare rough opening exposed to the street. For a business, an opening like this is more than an inconvenience: it cannot be locked, it cannot be secured overnight, and it sends exactly the wrong message to every customer who walks up to it. Architectural and custom entrances like this one are not stock units you pull off a shelf, so the building had been left waiting. We took the project on end to end, from measuring the opening to hanging a finished door the same day.
Architectural doors live and die on tolerances. A commercial entrance that takes hundreds of cycles a day has to be hung dead plumb and square, or it will sag, bind, and tear its own weatherseal apart within months. We started by squaring and preparing the rough opening, correcting the out-of-true framing that had contributed to the original failure. From there we set a custom steel door and frame sized precisely to the opening, shimmed it level, and anchored it solidly into the surrounding structure. With the slab hung, we adjusted the closer, set the strike and deadlatch so the lock engages cleanly, and fitted a full perimeter seal so the entrance shuts tight against Ottawa weather. By the end of the visit the business could lock up securely for the first time in days.
Ottawa’s commercial buildings — from Centretown storefronts to Kanata office units and Nepean service entrances — rely on entrances that work every single day in a punishing climate. Freeze-thaw cycles, road salt, and constant traffic wear commercial doors far harder than residential ones, and when a custom or architectural unit fails, most general handymen simply can’t source or fabricate a replacement. That is exactly the work we specialise in. We design, repair and install architectural and custom steel doors for businesses, property managers and contractors throughout Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley, and we keep the turnaround tight so a failed entrance never costs you more business than it has to.
