Before & after: a tired lever set on an Ottawa wood entry door retrofitted with an upgraded deadbolt, handle and mail slot for better security and curb appeal.

This Ottawa homeowner had a handsome solid wood front door they had no intention of replacing — but the hardware on it had given up. The old lever set was worn loose, the latch dragged, and the lock no longer caught the way it should, so the door could be pushed open with a shove on a bad day. Rather than tear out a perfectly good door, they wanted the security and the look brought up to date. A lock retrofit does exactly that: it upgrades the moving parts and the visible hardware while keeping the door itself, and it is a far smaller job than a full replacement.

The Repair

The art of a retrofit is fitting modern hardware into hardware prep that was bored decades ago, without scarring the woodgrain. We removed the failing lever set and assessed the existing cutouts, then matched a new grade-rated deadbolt and a coordinated handleset to suit the door’s thickness and backset. Where the old bore did not line up with the new lock, we adjusted it cleanly so everything seated flush. We chiseled fresh mortises for the strikes, re-aligned the keepers in the jamb so the deadbolt throws fully, and added a tidy mail slot to finish the front. Once everything was set, we keyed and tested the lock through dozens of cycles to confirm it engages smoothly and holds firm every time.

Problems We Solved

  • A worn lever set that no longer locked the door reliably or securely.
  • A latch and strike out of alignment, letting the door rattle and push open.
  • Dated, mismatched hardware that dragged down the entry’s curb appeal.
  • Old bores and mortises that did not fit a modern, higher-grade lockset.
  • The cost and disruption of replacing a perfectly sound solid wood door.

Benefits of the Repair

  • A grade-rated deadbolt that throws fully into a properly aligned strike.
  • Smooth, confident operation from a handleset matched to the door.
  • Upgraded security on the existing door — no full replacement needed.
  • A refreshed, coordinated front entry with a clean new mail slot.
  • Hardware finishes matched to the home for lasting curb appeal.

FAQ

Exterior Door Lock Retrofit in Ottawa — FAQs

Common questions about this project and the service behind it.

What does a lock retrofit involve?
+
Replacing or upgrading the existing lock — often to a higher-grade deadbolt or keyless unit — and realigning the strike so it latches cleanly. See our lock repair service.
Why retrofit instead of just repairing the old lock?
+
When a lock is worn, outdated or insecure, a retrofit upgrades security and reliability for little more than a repair, and lets us standardise keys.
Can you keep all my doors on one key?
+
Yes. We rekey the retrofitted locks so one key works across your doors, or set up a master-key arrangement.
Will a new lock fit my old door without damage?
+
Usually, yes — most retrofits use the existing bore. Where prep differs we fill and re-bore cleanly so the finish stays tidy.
